We’re more than just the Folk Festival

Besides the Annual Folk Festival and weekly folk night, the FAS presents other events including the Christmas Carol Wassail and numerous concerts.

Past workshops have highlighted the cultural heritage of the Province exploring several Newfoundland traditions including songs, set dancing, mat hooking, mummering and the playing of a wide variety of musical instruments. Young Folk at the Hall, a young people’s workshop and concert, has been offered annually since 2002.

YOUNG FOLK AT THE HALL

Young Folk at the Hall is a workshop-based program offering guidance and education, as well as a performance opportunity for youth between the ages of seven and 18. Since 2002, Fergus O’Byrne and the Folk Arts Festival have been working to encourage a love of traditional music in the next generation.

Our mentors – well known names from the traditional music community – offer coaching at several sessions, bringing together first-time and more senior players in workshops, followed by a final performance at the LSPU Hall.

The workshops allow young musicians to develop musical relationships; and primarily, to foster an interest in singing and playing folk music, and to share with and learn from their peers.
