Women in traditional song with Enoch Kent
Saturday, November 22, 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
MMAP Gallery 2nd Floor, Arts and Culture Centre
Legendary traditional singer Enoch Kent was born in Scotland and was a key figure in the folk revival in that country in the 50's and 60's particularly through his work with The Singers Club (aka “The Critics Group”) which he co-founded with internationally renowned folksingers, Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger. In this session, Enoch will touch on a number of issues surrounding this topic including women as both victims and heroines, and the characteristics of songs written from the woman's point of view. If it all sounds a bit serious, Enoch guarantees that he will do his best to avoid 'celtic gloom' and will also share a few bawdy songs and discuss the lighter side of the age old battle of the sexes.
Tickets $10 for FAS members, $15 for non-members

Founded in 2005, The Canadian Folk Music Awards recognize Canada's outstanding writers, producers and performers of folk music, and the artists who are expanding the genre in innovative and exciting ways. While the Junos pay homage to Canada's pop music success stories, the CFMAs celebrate the magnificent diversity of Canada's musical heritage – from the musical traditions of Aboriginal Canada to Celtic, Acadian and traditional Quebecois styles, singer-songwriter music, blues, bluegrass and old-tyme country and the myriad of global traditions brought to Canada by each new wave of immigration. What's more, the CFMAs provide an opportunity to draw Canadians' attention to the depth and breadth of folk music in Canada.

Artistic Fraud & Stephenville Theatre Festival present: Emile's Dream
Legendary Newfoundland fiddler and storyteller Emile Benoit was a
figurehead for the Newfoundland folk renaissance, contributing over
150 distinctly original fiddle compositions, and his seemingly
endless catalogue of fantastical stories of English, Irish, and
French origins.
Originally commissioned by and co-produced at the Stephenville
Theatre Festival as Vive La Rose, Emile's Dream is a lively
theatrical and musical tribute to a true Newfoundland legend. Benoit
was a character of mythic proportions while he was alive and still
now, fifteen years after his death. Emile's Dream is as alive and
unpredictable as the man himself, with three actor/fiddlers trading
off Emile's words and music in a kinetic verbal and musical juggling
act. Kelly Russell, once a protégé of Emile himself, leads the
group of three that also includes Daniel Payne and Phil Churchill.
Emile's Dream is a must see for any and all with an interest in the
music, stories, and French culture of Newfoundland, and for those who
love a lively story and a night of great tunes.
Written by Robert Chafe with words and music from Emile Benoit and
directed by Jillian Keiley, Emile's Dream is playing for three nights
only Dec. 5 to Dec. 7.
Don't be disappointed; get your tickets early at Fred's Records and
Britannia Teas.
The show is 8 pm nightly with a family friendly matinee Dec 6th at 2pm, at the D.F. Cook Recital Hall at the MUN School of Music.

NLAC: 26 New ArtsSmarts Projects in Newfoundland and Labrador Schools (NL)
Students and teachers from across the province are again working with professional artists to explore core curriculum subjects in creative and innovative ways. ArtsSmarts has awarded $101,408 to 26 schools in Newfoundland and Labrador for the 2008-2009 school year.
ArtsSmarts is a national initiative administered in this province by the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council. Schools apply to bring professional artists into the classroom to help teachers and students integrate arts activities into non-arts subject areas. Some of the projects this year include an exploration of religious symbolism through rug hooking; creating paper mache models of salmon in science; and learning traditional Irish dance in social studies.
Originally launched by the J. W. McConnell Family Foundation, ArtsSmarts in Newfoundland and Labrador is funded by the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education's Cultural Connections Strategy, the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council, and the National ArtsSmarts Initiative.
Since 1998 ArtsSmarts has awarded $960,927 to schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
For a complete list of schools and projects, please email the NLAC at nlacmail@nfld.net or call, 1-800-726-2212.
