The late Joan Morrissey is often called the province’s “First Lady of Song”. Her career spanned two decades until her untimely death in 1978. Morrissey’s repertoire included county, folk, traditional and show tunes. Many of the songs Morrissey performed were written by Tom Cahill and have become staple folksongs such as “Thank God We’re Surrounded by Water” and “The Mobile Goat”.
Sherry Ryan, Janet Cull and Andrea Monro — a few of our current Ladies of Song — pay tribute to Joan Morrissey with a selection of her songs.
Janet Cull is enigmatic. She’s a firecracker, a force to be reckoned with. She has boundless energy and limitless talent. Her voice is warm, inviting and timeless but maybe just a little bit dirty. Janet is one of Newfoundland’s most prolific local artists. Her most recent album “Real Tough Love” was released in 2016 to great acclaim and has already garnered her several awards and accolades. She has most recently received 3 MusicNL awards: FACTOR Album of the Year Female Artist of the Year and Pop/Rock Artist of the Year. Janet has also been selected as the only Canadian finalist (vocal performance) for the Unsigned Only 2017 competition. Janet has been performing to support the album since early 2017 including an opening slot during Marianas Trench’s most recent east coast tour and a feature special performance opening for Grammy Award winning artist k.d. lang.
