Come all ye and I’ll spin a yarn…On Tuesday, September 19th, seven of Canada’s finest folk musicians will join forces for a very special concert, weaving together story songs and tunes from home and away. The show will spotlight beloved local legends Matthew Byrne, Jean Hewson, Christina Smith, Gerry Strong, Billy Sutton and Jason Whelan as well as Cambridge, Ontario’s Allison Lupton. The concert will also include the debut of “Step Up Molly”, a song by Lupton about the young women who were recruited from Newfoundland to work in the Dominion Woollens Mill in Cambridge, ON during WWII. Fergus O’Byrne and the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Arts Society have been working to encourage a love of traditional music in young people through the Young Folk at the Hall. Young Folk is a workshop-based program offering guidance and education, as well as a performance opportunity for youth between the ages of seven and 18. Each year we register about 50 young artists who are are grouped into bands, and each band is mentored by older musicians and veterans of the program. Our young bands get about six hours of mentoring over two days to establish a common repertoire, arrange tunes, decide on a band name and have photos taken. After all that, we gather for the big show and the new bands perform the material for a live audience. Doors open at 6:30pm, the event will start at 7pm!
