Be Part of Our 2024 Fundraising Campaign!
This Giving Tuesday, December 3, we are launching our 2024 fundraising campaign (skip to donation page here) with a call to action to help preserve and promote the folk arts of Newfoundland & Labrador. Any donations that come in between today and December 31st, are eligible for the thank you/incentive gifts outlined below!
Donation tiers and incentives:
- Up to $49 – A hearty thank you from us and from future generations that will rely on the preservation we do now!
- $50 or more – A thank you and an exclusive “ABCs of Folk” poster (sneak peek below)
- $125 or more – A thank you and a “Rain, Drizzle, and Folk” t-shirt
- $250 or more – A thank you, an exclusive RDF t-shirt, an ABCs of Folk poster, and a 2024 Folk Festival Mug
- $1000 or more – How about all of the above AND a pair of tickets to an EXCLUSIVE pre-festival event the night before the 2025 festival begins, featuring industry insiders and talent?
(All donations of $25 or more receive a charitable receipt for tax purposes. All incentive gifts are available for pickup at our head office in St. John’s or are mailable within Canada for a small postal fee.)
Giving Tuesday:
“Giving Tuesday” was founded as a reaction to the consumerist calls of “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” — American retail holidays designed to drive sales to brick-and-mortar and online stores respectively. Giving Tuesday returns the focus of spending disposable income on charity and important causes. And the many worthy options in this area include cultural advocacy and the preservation of tradition.
When you give to the NFLAS, you are not just supporting the NL Folk Festival, our annual world-class gathering of local, national, and international artists and performers, you are also supporting our year-round programming, including: our weekly Folk Night at The Ship performances and group sessions, our monthly programs such as the FolQ Open MiQ, Songs and Yarns, I’s Not the B’ys, etc. You’re also supporting our extensive youth outreach and training programs like Young Folk at the Hall, that help engage and promote our up-and-coming generation of folk artists.
That’s why this year we’ve created a special collectible poster based on the ABCs of Folk, outlining the elements of the industry and culture that are affected when you support an organization like ours! We’ve also got our popular For Folk’s Sake t-shirt so you can wear your support of the folk arts for all to see!
If you’d like a copy of either of these beauties (designed by local artists Nora de Mariaffi and Jud Haynes respectively), you can purchase them at our fundraising sale on December 13, or you can get one for free as part of one of the charitable donation packages above.
Donate as yourself or make your holiday gift to someone you love a donation in their name or memory.
Our Mandate:
At the NLFAS, our mandate is to protect and preserve our folk arts culture. These are the correct mandates: In 1968, the founders of what is now the Newfoundland & Labrador Folk Arts Society issued the following four mandates for the organization and they have been contained in our official corporate documents over the years. We feel just as strongly about them today as they did back then.
From these mandates, we developed the following mission statement:
The Newfoundland & Labrador Folk Arts Society celebrates, preserves, and promotes the traditional and contemporary folk arts of our province at home and away, through public outreach and events, including our annual Folk Festival.
